NEW WOMEN AUTEURS OF CONTEMPORARY WORLD CINEMA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This winter, join Guest Curator Jacqueline Lyanga, Global Cinematheque\u2019s Founder and Artistic Director for a spotlight on auteur women of contemporary world cinema. This free public screening series features women filmmakers who each bring their own distinct point-of-view, visual and narrative style to the art form of moving pictures and evolve the representation of women in cinema.\u00a0 This series will open on January 9 with the Mexican film T\u00d3TEM from Lila Avil\u00e9s at the Vidiots Foundation Eagle Theater at 7pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a bustling Mexican household, seven-year-old Sol is swept up in a whirlwind of preparations for the birthday party for her father, Tona, led by her mother, aunts and other relatives. As the day goes on, building to an event both anticipated and dreaded, Sol begins to understand the gravity of the celebration this year and watches as her family does the same. This poignant and emotionally expansive film from Lila Avil\u00e9s (The Chambermaid) cements her skill at directing dynamic ensemble performances in her stunning sophomore effort. T\u00f3tem had its world premiere at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival and was Mexico\u2019s official entry for the Oscar\u2019s Best International Feature Film category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kaltenb\u00e4ck\u2019s first feature deftly explores and unravels the mythologies of motherhood and sisterhood with the influence of filmmakers Kelly Reichardt and Lucrecia Martel on display.
