Global CINEMATHEQUE’s FILM at LACMA program returns with a 2024 Winter Program of New Women Auteurs of Contemporary World Cinema – TICKETS ARE FREE with your RSVP and all screenings take place at the Vidiots Foundation Eagle Theater in Eagle Rock.

NEW WOMEN AUTEURS OF CONTEMPORARY WORLD CINEMA

This winter, join Guest Curator Jacqueline Lyanga, Global Cinematheque’s Founder and Artistic Director for a spotlight on auteur women of contemporary world cinema. This free public screening series features women filmmakers who each bring their own distinct point-of-view, visual and narrative style to the art form of moving pictures and evolve the representation of women in cinema.  This series will open on January 9 with the Mexican film TÓTEM from Lila Avilés at the Vidiots Foundation Eagle Theater at 7pm.

In a bustling Mexican household, seven-year-old Sol is swept up in a whirlwind of preparations for the birthday party for her father, Tona, led by her mother, aunts and other relatives. As the day goes on, building to an event both anticipated and dreaded, Sol begins to understand the gravity of the celebration this year and watches as her family does the same. This poignant and emotionally expansive film from Lila Avilés (The Chambermaid) cements her skill at directing dynamic ensemble performances in her stunning sophomore effort. Tótem had its world premiere at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival and was Mexico’s official entry for the Oscar’s Best International Feature Film category.

Eleven-year-old Ama and her mother, Grace, take solace in the gentle but isolated world they obsessively create as African immigrants living in Glasgow. But Ama’s thirst for life and her need to grow and develop, challenges the rules of their insular world and gradually forces Grace to reckon with a past she struggles to forget. This impressive feature directorial debut from British-Nigerian playwright Adura Onashile premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition.

Lydia, a midwife highly invested in her career, is going through a bad break-up that is making her feel like she has lost control of her life. Yet, when her pregnant best friend Salomé asks her to monitor her pregnancy, she cannot refuse, and neither of them is prepared for the turbulent emotional journey that they are about to embark on. Kaltenbäck’s first feature deftly explores and unravels the mythologies of motherhood and sisterhood with the influence of filmmakers Kelly Reichardt and Lucrecia Martel on display. The Rapture had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as part of the Critics Week (Semaine de la Critique) program where it won the SACD (Authors Society) Award.

Ostracized by her friends and community as she transforms, Zaffan fights back, learning that to be free she must embrace the body she feared, emerging as a proud, strong woman. Tiger Stripes is an empowering feminist genre film that had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as part of the Critics Week (Semaine de la Critique) program where it won the Grand Prize. The film was also Malaysia’s official entry for the Oscar’s Best International Feature Film category.
